If Wikipedia is to be believed (which is sometimes doubtful), these flowers are associated with death and sorrow in Asia (where they originated), but for me they only mean beauty and autumn. I'm very fond of them.

(I think it's finally no longer photographable, though-- at least as far as the flowers go. Unless you like dried, brown blooms, that is...)

229/365 - Gardenia

Our gardenia bloomed its best this year. It seems to have really taken off in growth lately, too. Unfortunately, because of where we built the patio, I'm going to have to move it. I'm planning to wait until the dormant season, though-- no need to add to its stress during the heat of summer. In the meantime, I have to decide where to move it. . .

227/365 - Hydrangea AGAIN

Yet another photo of the hydrangea. (Apparently I need to plant more flowers, but that would require spending time outside-- something I tend to avoid when temperature and humidity conspire against me, as they do now.)

224/365 - Crepe Myrtle

These white crepe myrtles are finally growing into more of a tree shape and size instead of the shrubby things they've been for years. They still have a very weepy habit, but that's ok. I'm just glad they're finally staring to to look more like trees!

. . . I wonder if the arc of them we planted in the northwestern corner will slowly grow into more treelike shapes, too. . .

220/365 - Insect on Stoke's Aster

The flower is a Stoke's aster (a transplant from Granny L.'s garden). I'm not sure what the insect is. Some type of bee? There were "real" bees around the flowers, too, but they didn't sit as still as this tiny one, so they don't get to be in Project 365. (That'll teach 'em.)

219/365 - Hydrangea

This is the hydrangea I posted a photo of (in my Flickr photostream) a day or two ago.

This is the only hydrangea I have that reliably blooms every year. The flowers are an unusual color, too-- or at least it seems unusual to me. Instead of the typical blue, pale pink, or even lavender, it starts out in this chartreuse / yellow-green with pink-purple edges, then gradually becomes more and more pink-purple as the flower ages. I know that bloom color in some hydrangeas depends on the pH of the soil, but I'm not sure if that's true for all of them.

This is a not-perfectly-focused macro of thistledown (as you may have surmised from the title).

206/365 - Stubborn Rose

I'm not sure of its type or name, but this rose has been stubborn enough to continue living and blooming even through neglect. (Thank goodness for hardy plants.)

These were blooming in my maternal grandmother's garden.

203/365 - Coreopsis

If it weren't for Trixie, coreopsis, and pink roses, I don't know what I'd have found to photograph this month. (Taking the lazy way. . .)

200/365 - Weird Bug

I can't say exactly what this bug is, but there were several of them lurking among the roses.

Unfortunately, this was the best photo I got of them (on this day, at least). I had a hard time getting the focus just right.

I can't help but think they're pretty, even though I know they don't belong in our yard.
